Early Years Education

Job Opportunities

There are hundreds of jobs and work experience opportunities for students and graduates in London. International students who study a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree course at a recognized university are allowed to work part-time during term for up to 20 hours a week and full-time during the holidays. There are thousands of part-time student jobs in London to help support your studies. Many universities have careers and work placement centres to help you find employment. You can work up to 10 hours a week if you are studying a course that is below degree level at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) and also if you have immigration permission as a Tier 4 (Child) Student and you are at least 16 years old.

Tier 5 Temporary Worker visa allows you to work in the UK for up to 12 or 24 months (depending on the scheme you’re applying for). International students in the UK can apply for the Tier 5 (Government Authorized Exchange) visa to undertake work experience and internships in the UK after their studies. You can apply to switch from your Tier 4 visa to this visa from within the UK.

There are two sources of benefit for students in the UK. International students who are studying in the UK for 6 months or more qualify for free health care through the National Health Service. The National Union of Students also helps students get many discounts on things like books, stationery, food, clothes, travel and entertainment. All the students are entitled to free NUS membership.

If you are refused a visa the university that is accepted, in most cases, will give you a refund on the deposit that you have paid in advance. To get your deposit back, however, you will need to send the university a copy of your visa refusal letter. Some institutions may deduct a 100 pounds as processing fee for the refund.

There are some universities that require the students to pay a part of the tuition fees in advance to reserve a place for them at the university. Paying a deposit can also facilitate you getting a visa and is important that you pay it.

There is no formal ranking system for universities in the UK, the government, however, does take responsibility to monitor and control the quality of education. The teaching facilities of each institution is under the purview of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education. The government also conducts a Research Assessment Exercise once in every 5 years. This determines the level of research activity in each university department. The departments are graded as high as 5 and as low as 1. A prospective student can also check the General League Tables prepared by newspapers like Sunday Times and Financial Times.

Overseas students must pass one or multiple tests prior to being considered for admission by the majority of the Universities in the UK. These include standardised college and graduate admission tests like SAT, GMAT, and GRE. English language tests like IELTS and TOEFL are also included.

In order to go to London from India for studies you must:

Identify a course from out of the 30,000 plus courses that the London City has to offer

Prepare and submit an application for admission and the application process for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees is not the same

In case of a full time international student, 20 hours part time work is allowed during the term period and 40 hours or full time during vacations. On an average, a student is paid a minimum of 7-10 pounds per hour.
